Chinese FM pushes "China-U.S.-Russia" consultation mechanism to work effectively on Afghanistan's peaceful reconstruction

INTERNATIONAL: Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday called for efforts to make the "China-U.S.-Russia +" consultation mechanism play a more effective role in the peaceful reconstruction of Afghanistan.

Wang made the remarks when meeting with special envoys and representatives for the Afghan issue of China, the United States, Russia, and Pakistan in Tunxi, east China's Anhui Province.

Wang noted that China, the U.S., Russia and Pakistan are major stakeholders in the Afghan issue, and the four countries have important influence in Afghanistan.

Since major changes took place in Afghanistan, the consultation mechanism has played a constructive role in facilitating a smooth transition in the country, said Wang.

Under new circumstances, the four parties need to adjust their work, support Afghanistan in its reconstruction and improving its people’s livelihoods, and promote Afghanistan's responding to the expectation of international community, especially the fulfillment of its commitments of completely break with, fight and sweep out terrorist forces, he said.

For the next step of the mechanism's work, Wang made three suggestions. First is to enhance coordination, expand consensuses and together send out positive signals.

Second is to focus on dealing with concrete issues, especially unfreezing Afghanistan’s overseas assets and canceling unreasonable sanctions, on which the U.S. should take concrete actions.

Third is to make the consultation mechanism play an effective role in the peaceful reconstruction of Afghanistan and the well-being of the people.

On the same day, the meeting of the "China-U.S.-Russia-Pakistan" consultation mechanism on the Afghan issue was held in Tunxi. The Chinese side chaired the meeting.
